Message Here's my current thinking on catching up with Snow Leopard.

As I've struggled with this, I've found that I need to use installer
tricks, libraries, and other release-dependent tools, and it's all
kind of boxed me into a corner. As a result, this plan is considerably
more restrictive--and complicated--than I like. I put it forward as a
proposal: I'm really interested in reactions, I'm really eager to hear
alternatives, suggestions, and pleading for things I've left out. But
I've also put a lot of time into what I'm proposing so far, and
haven't got a whole whale of a lot of time to implement anything
fancy, so please comment, but don't be surprised if I push back. If it
matters to you, push me right back!

Before I go any further, I want to give a big shout-out to Aria
Gagnon, who recently contributed the Toolbar Button code you'll see
mentioned. The more I flailed over this plan, the more I found myself
depending on the Button to solve knotty issues. The button's good
work, by a new member of the community (and, indeed, new to the
platform), and it just couldn't have come at a more opportune time.
So, thanks, Auria! You saved my bacon!

Here's the roadmap I'm proposing:

Release 0.7.x:
  - Last release that supports 10.3 (Panther)
  - Also upports 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard)
  - Does NOT support 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
  - Features as we know and love them today
  - Status: "maintenance mode"
  - - No real work planned on this line
  - - I'll cut a few new releases for new Subversion versions, but
have no other plans
  - - Happy to accept contributions, and to fix bugs, but if you're
asking, I'm suggesting you put your work into one of the newer lines

Release 0.8.x:
  - Does NOT support 10.3 (Panther)
  - Does support 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard)
  - Limited support for 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
  - Main new feature: Toolbar Button (the primary UI for Snow Leopard,
optional on Leopard)
  - Main lost feature: for Snow Leopard, no badging, no contextual menus
  - Primary point of work for a while
  - - New installer and package formats, and any other transitional
stuff
  - - Most active bug-fix and general enhancement ofcus
  - - Will track Subversion releases pretty closely, as 0.7.x has
been, lately

Release 0.9.x:
  - Does NOT support 10.3, 10.4, or 10.5
  - Fully supports 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
  - Main new feature: restructuring as a Service, restoration of
badging (by a different mechanism)
  - Takes over as primary enhancement point as soon as work begins
(which I'll announce in all appropriate channels)
  - Conversion to Objective-C 2.0, garbage collection, Services menu,
file system events
